Have you ever dreamed of collecting fresh eggs from your own backyard? Raising your kids around chickens, gardens, and the rhythm of honest work? Maybe you’ve caught yourself searching “how to raise baby chicks,” “chicken breeds for beginners,” “how to homestead with children,” or “God-centered family farm life.”
Friend, you are not alone—and you are exactly where you’re meant to be.
I’m Tori Gass and welcome to Chickens and Farming Made Easy, a podcast where we blend practical chicken-keeping know-how with honest family life, deep faith, and a whole lot of humor. Whether you’re just beginning to think about raising chickens or you’re already deep in the mud boots and mayhem, this show is here to walk with you—step by step, chore by chore, prayer by prayer.
We’re a family living out God’s calling to steward the land, raise our children with intention, and lean into the beauty of a slower, simpler life. But it hasn’t been easy. After losing everything in a flood—our home, our animals, our plans—we were left with nothing but each other, Jesus, and a laptop that floated just long enough to help us start again. That’s where Lost Sheep Farm was born. And now, we’re sharing the journey with you.
On this podcast, you’ll hear:
Beginner-friendly guides to raising chickens for eggs or meat
Tips for choosing the right breed, feed, coop setup, and daily routine
Real talk about what it’s like to juggle farming, faith, and raising kids
Encouragement for mamas trying to do it all (without losing their minds)
Ways to include your children in daily farm life and teach them responsibility
Devotional moments that remind us why we’re doing all of this in the first place
And a good dose of laughter, chicken chaos, and backyard blessings
Whether you live on five acres or in a suburban backyard, whether you’re wrangling chicks or toddlers (or both), this show is for anyone who feels called to a more intentional life—one filled with family, faith, and fresh eggs.
Each episode is packed with practical advice, spiritual encouragement, and real stories from our family to yours. This isn’t perfection—this is real life with chickens and children, dirt under our nails, and grace in our hearts. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be willing to start.
So pull on your boots, grab your coffee, and join me each week as we build something beautiful together. A life where chores become lessons, where chaos becomes joy, and where even a little backyard flock can be part of something so much bigger.

Raise Chickens & Plan Your Homestead: How to Design, Set Up, and Start While Avoiding Beginner Mistakes
If you’re thinking about raising chickens or starting a homestead this year, this episode walks you through what most beginners get wrong before they ever bring animals home. We talk about how to plan and design your homestead the right way, how to avoid costly beginner mistakes, and why timing matters more than people realize when it comes to starting strong.
One of the biggest lessons shared in this episode is the importance of ordering chickens early if your setup is ready. Hatcheries sell out quickly, and waiting too long can throw off your entire homestead plan for the year. This episode breaks down how to think ahead, plan intentionally, and avoid scrambling when spring arrives.
To help you take the next step, Lost Sheep Farm is hosting a FREE live Homestead Planning Workshop where we’ll walk through real-life homestead decisions, answer questions live, and help you build a clear plan without the guesswork.

Raising chickens is often the first step in building a homestead, but one of the biggest beginner mistakes happens before the chicks ever arrive. In this episode, we talk about how to raise chickens and plan your homestead the right way — starting with proper design, setup, and timing.
We walk through homestead planning for beginners, how to design a chicken setup that works long-term, and how to avoid wasting time and money by doing things out of order. Whether you’re raising chickens for eggs, planning to raise meat chickens, or learning how to start raising chickens for the first time, this episode covers the foundations that matter most.
The BIG thing I wish I knew sooner: if your coop and setup are ready, you need to start looking at ordering chickens NOW. Hatcheries sell out quickly, especially in spring, and waiting too long can mean missing the entire season. We talk about why timing matters, how hatchery availability affects your homestead plan, and how ordering chicks early can save you months of frustration.
This episode is especially helpful for anyone raising backyard chickens for beginners, planning chickens on pasture, or trying to build a homestead with clarity instead of guesswork.
If you want to raise chickens and plan your homestead with confidence — not panic when everything is sold out — this episode will help you start smart and avoid one of the most common beginner mistakes.

In this episode, we pause from commentary and conversation and simply read the Word of God aloud. This is the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, shared directly from Scripture, just as it is written.
In a season that can feel loud and rushed, this episode is an invitation to slow down, listen, and sit with the truth of why Jesus came. No explanations, no added thoughts — only Scripture, read clearly and intentionally, so the focus remains fully on Christ.

Homestead Chicken Farming, Full Freezers, Busy Days, and Jesus at the Center
This episode is a real-life homestead reflection on chicken farming, stewardship, and faith. After live butchering chickens on the homestead — with over 10,000 viewers joining in — we processed and packaged 100 birds and finished the work completely. Because the work was done, there was space to slow down, rest, and truly focus on Jesus during a season that is often rushed and overwhelming.
We talk about what it looks like to keep Christ at the center of homestead farm life during the busiest time of year, why preparation matters both practically and spiritually, and how finishing the work God places in front of us creates room for peace. We also reflect on Mary — what it must have been like to raise a toddler who was also the Savior of the world — and why Jesus entering ordinary, busy life matters for us today. This episode invites you to slow down, return to Scripture, and remember what this season is truly about.

Heavenly Homestead Academy — YES, WE ARE OPEN 🎉
Cold weather is rolling in fast, and before the temperature drops, it’s important to know if your chicken coop is truly ready. In this episode, we break down our go-to trick for preparing your coop for the cold winter ahead, including how we use plastic the right way, why ventilation matters more than heat, and how simple preparation can protect your flock during an unexpected cold snap.
This episode is real life — recorded with a baby on my lap, giving you a first-hand view of the chaos that comes with homesteading, motherhood, and obedience all happening at once. We talk about finishing finals, stacking a lot of wood, taking our sheep to the butcher, and trusting God through big decisions and everyday overwhelm. If you’ve ever felt behind or unsure if you’re doing “enough,” this conversation is meant to feel like you’re on the phone with your slightly crazy best friend — babies crying in the background and all — reminding you that preparation brings peace and God is faithful in every season.

Winter doesn’t have to mean empty egg baskets! In this episode, we’re breaking down the shockingly simple, fast, and easy secret to keeping your chickens laying eggs all winter long. Most chicken owners think cold temperatures or shorter days are the main problem — but the real reason your hens stop laying is something totally fixable: they’re not getting enough protein.
When the weather drops, your hens burn extra energy to stay warm, and egg production takes a backseat unless you boost their nutrition. And the good news? Improving winter laying is easier (and cheaper!) than you think. In this episode, I share exactly what to feed, how much protein they need, and the best low-cost protein boosters you can start using today to keep those eggs coming steady through the cold months.
If you want a practical, doable homestead win this winter… this is it!
